“Truth-telling really improves relationships and can be surprisingly easy when you use Susan’s ground-breaking truth skills.”
-John Bradshaw

My Background
I have been coaching individuals, couples, business partners, entrepreneurs, executives, and work teams for 40 years. I have a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from UMASS in Amherst, where I also taught on their graduate faculty, training other counselors, for 10 years. While at UMASS, I founded their Couple and Family Therapy Graduate Program. I am in demand throughout the world as a trainer of other therapists and coaches.

Since 2001, I have run my own coach training program, training people to do what I call “Getting Real Coaching.” Most of the people I train are already coaches, therapists, or trainers. But I do accept people into my program who have no prior coaching experience. I tailor the training program to fit the needs of the trainee. To learn more about opportunities and training to do Getting Real Coaching (Much of which can be done via teleclass), please visit www.susancampbell.com

I am author of nine books on interpersonal relationships and human communication, and am best-known for the best sellers: The Couple’s Journey: Intimacy as a Path to Wholeness, GETTING REAL:10 TRUTH SKILLS YOU NEED TO LIVE AN AUTHENTIC LIFE, and Saying What’s Real: Seven Keys to Authentic Communication and Relationship Success.

About My Coaching Services

Even though I train other coaches, I also love coaching individuals and partnerships, both on the phone and in person. And my fees are quite reasonable. To schedule a free 15 minute coaching session, visit www.susancampbell.com.

In my individaul coaching I help you to
learn to speak your truth so you'll be heard and to listen so you can understand and accept the other's reality; develop deep intimacy; rebuild trust in relationhsips that have been damaged; clear unfinished business; and learn communication tools that can help all your relationships be more effective, healthy, and satisfying.

For couples and partnerships, I offer expert facilitation in getting beyond blame, struggle, and communication misunderstandings; bring harmony and joy into all aspects of your relationship -- sexual, co-creative, financial, parenting, spiritual. I help you fully experience and share all your feelings, thoughts, and wants, while working with (and growing from) the creative energy accompanying the differences between yourself and another person.

I also lead workshops and on-going Honesty Salons in Northern and Southern California and round the globe. I’ll be teaching for 2 weeks in May 2006 in Austrailia. See www.susancampbell.com for details about Honesty Salons and the Austrailia tour.

My Philosophy and Approach
If there is one thing that detroys true intimacy and authentic human connection, it is peoples’ fear of emotional discomfort. We have developed so many defense mechanisms to protect ourselves from our fears that we have lost touch with our capacity for real human connection. We have come to believe that our “personalities” and “patterned ways of relating” are who we really are. But there is so much more to being human and relating to others—if we could only let down our guard and feel what we really feel.

Most people are afraid to be totally honest—even with those closest to them. They fear rocking the boat, being judged, or hurting the other’s feelings. Yet without honesty, we never truly know ourselves or our intimate partners. I think people would be more honest if they only trusted that they could do so without damaging the relationship….if they only had the necessary honesty skills. So I offer all my clients (among othr things) the opportunity to learn and practice 10 truth skills that will enable them to overcome their fears and show up more authentically.

Some of the things you will learn from working with me are:

  • How to grow from your differences and conflicts with others
  • What to do when your buttons get pushed
  • How to be intimate without “losing yourself”
  • Specific communication tools for preventing and resolving conflicts
  • Practices for overcoming fears of intimacy and opening to emotional and sexual vulnerability
  • Personal practices for creating an ongoing sense of physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
